Forecastle, which began as a small community gathering in 2002 in one of Frederick Law Olmstead's famed Louisville parks, has grown into an internationally recognized festival at Louisville's Waterfront Park, attracting over 30,000 attendees annually. Since 2002, over 450 bands, 100 artists, and 150 environmental and outdoor recreation organizations have participated, as well as influential speakers such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (Riverkeepers), Rob Caughlan (Surfrider Foundation) and Christopher Childs (Greenpeace International). Previous Forecastle musical guests include The Smashing Pumpkins, The Flaming Lips, Widespread Panic, The Black Crowes, The Black Keys, Spoon, DEVO, Band of Horses, She & Him, Bassnectar, Tortoise, De La Soul, Sleater-Kinney, Zappa Plays Zappa, Big Boi, GZA, Girl Talk, Z-Trip, Umphreys McGee, The Disco Biscuits, and Yonder Mountain String Band.
